The scenery along Adelaide's Port River isn't what you would call pretty, but its interesting. From historical wharves at Port Adelaide where scores of sailing ships and early steamers once disgorged their cargo into the strong, calloused hands of 3000 rough-and tumble waterside workers, you cruise past gigantic steel structures of heavy industry, massive white columns of grain silos reaching towards the sky, freighters, derricks and assorted maritime miscellany.
Further along are the heritage-listed mangrove swamps which once lined the banks all the way to "Port Misery", a muddy anchorage at the upper reaches of the Port River where colonial settlers battled harsh conditions, along with disease born by mosquitos.
We cruised along the river, past the Australian Submarine Corporation facility where Collins Class subs are built and on past the power station on Torrens Island named after Robert Torrens, a Colonial South Australian Premier who create the Torrens Title land system used in many parts of the world.
Of the 500 people spread over the three levels of Dolphin Cruises "Explorer", 180 were members of Going Places With Gareth singles network. Around forty Celtic musicians played tin-whistles, fiddles, guitars and other assorted instruments in traditional style. Some guests danced Irish jigs, others just enjoyed friendly conversation over a few drinks while they spotted for Adelaide's famous bottlenose dolphins.
A significant percentage of the $10 ticket price went to help pay for a new P.A. system in the Irish Association Hall in Carrington Street, Adelaide where many Celtic events are held, including the monthly Bush Dances which many of our members attend.
This is the third such cruise with all three sold out in advance. Another one is planned for 5th November this year.
