In the wake of the smoking ban in pubs and pokie dens, bands at hotels frequented by rock & roll dancers are going down like skittles. A sharp fall in pokie revenue has resulted in a profit drop, driving home a hard reality of the world we live in. Dancers don't spend nearly as much on booze as do younger cocktail-shooters. Hence, the bands that attract them are out. It hurts to have the door slammed in your face, especially when you're labeled a profit liability. But it helps to remember that rock & roll was profit driven from the outset. Simply put, dollar hunger spawned rock & roll. Dollar hunger will kill it off.
Continue reading "Rock 'n' Roll: The Buck Giveth And The Buck Taketh Away!"

The sailing community has long held a tenet that the accuracy of weather forecasts is abysmal. That attitude led to near disaster on Australia Day, January 26th 1995. Forty-four Heron class yachts were competing in a state title heat at the Largs Bay Sailing Club located in a western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. Eighty-eight lives were put at risk, almost half of them children.
Continue reading "Sailing Children's Lives Stupidly Risked"

On the morning of Thursday, 7th December 2007 highly popular musical duo Boris Loves To Boogie set up their equipment in the Gymnasium of the Suneden Special School at Mitchell Park, South Australia. This gig was unusual in that the audience consisted of several dozen children with various intellectual disabilities, including Downs syndrome and Angelman's Syndrome.
