The one time I sat in the gallery of the South Australian lower house of parliament it was to watch Don Dunstan in his sexy shorts dominate the proceedings. He was a star peformer in anyone's language.
Dunstan was a true leader who impressed even his most ardent critics. His eventual death in quiet retirement as a part-time restaurateur seems rather an anti-climax. I am surprised that in view of his government's success, and his own major role in tearing down archaic value taboos, South Australians haven't been able to honor him with a major icon of some sort. We may not go as far as the Dunstan Memorial hospital instead of 'The Marj', although to me it's an appealing thought.
