Richard is a volunteer for the Adelaide Zoo. The shared lunch held at his fabulous Edwardstown home on this late spring afternoon was an animal charity fundraiser. Donations went to the Adelaide Zoo, the Port River Dolphin appeal and the Chinese Moon Bear appeal.
The day was warm and the company was friendly. Guests began arriving from 12.30 PM bringing with them an assortment of food including casseroles, cold-cuts and various delicacies. When arranged several plates deep on his very large dining room table the contributions promised a feast easily enough to satisfy the appetites of the 110 people who attended.
In the garden, folding chairs were parked wherever there was spare space, wine bottles were uncorked using a corkscrew that permanently hangs from the bough of a large tree and the hum of conversation began to grow. Strains of music emanated from the rumpus room and the party was in full swing.
At 2PM the lunch bell rang and the guests lined up expectantly, paper plates in hand, for a helping from the seemingly endless dishes. When the last stragglers (usually Gareth) had filled their plates there was still a lot of food left over, but since the afternoon was just beginning there was plenty of time for second helpings or to nibble during the course of the day.
The afternoon sun shining in a clear blue sky provided us with the perfect day for for a party in a lush, well-tended garden. A few people even took a dip in the large swimming pool. Others danced away their energies to some great old music from our youth including, needless to say, Eric Burden and The Animals.
By evening most guests had left but a few (party animal) diehards remained for dinner and to help clean up, something we religiously do after a party. Another very successful event had been held and the guests were eagerly looking forward to the next function.
